M-type (22) Kalliope: A tiny Mercury

Context. Asteroid (22) Kalliope is the second largest M-type asteroid in main belt and orbited by a satellite, Linus. Whereas mass of already well constrained thanks to presence moon, its volume still poorly known, leading uncertainties on bulk density internal structure. Aims. We aim refine shape thus diameter density, as orbit moon better constrain mass, hence Methods. acquired disk-resolved observations using VLT/SPHERE/ZIMPOL instrument reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) three different modeling techniques. These images were also used together with new speckle at C2PU/PISCO archival from other large ground-based telescopes Results. The given models, corresponding D = 150 ± 5 km, satellite’s yield ρ 4.40 0.46 g cm −3 . This high potentially makes densest known small body Solar System. A macroporosity 10–25% range (as expected for this size), implies grain 4.8–5.9 range. Kalliope’s along silicate-rich surface implied low radar albedo, differentiated interior metal contributing most body. Conclusions. content (40–60%) metal-poor mantle it smallest Mercury-like impact origin formation Linus likely cause density.
